Studentersamfundet (The Student Society) is the largest of its kind in Scandinavia—an iconic institution at the heart of Trondheim's cultural, political, and nightlife scenes. Run by and for students, it has long been one of the city’s most vital meeting places.
The original building from 1927 could no longer accommodate the thousands of students who pass through its doors each week. In 2024, a major new extension opened—making it the largest club in Europe. (6 000 + 5 000 sqm)
I was responsible for the interior design of this new extension, as well as the renovation of the original house (together 8+ different projects). Studentersamfundet is a house like a city: a maze of unique, unconventional rooms. This eccentricity inspired bold, varied design responses across a wide range of spaces—cafés, bars, a brewery, a hall, gallery, and multipurpose rooms.
The project was designed and built by us students. I was proud to serve as one of the project leaders, responsible for shaping both the vision and execution of the extension and renovation. Throughout the process, user involvement was crucial: we worked closely with the society’s 2 000 volunteers to ensure their voices were heard.
The building and its projects within is far from finished—and may never be. It continues to evolve as an ever-changing house; waiting for required resources, adapting with new ideas, repairing and altering.
